The Photograph Collector’s Guide Revision, Bulfinch 2005- 2007Lee D. Witkin and Barbara LondonLorraine Anne Davis, EditorIn 1979, Barbara London, Lee Witkin and The New York Graphic Society published The Photograph Collector’s Guide, the first important book about collecting. The original copy is still used by collectors, researchers, libraries, galleries and museums. Long out of print, The Photograph Collector’s Guide can be found in the out-of-print book market for as much as $300.00. Having relied on the book myself for so many years, it had been my hope to one day update and revise the original. In 2004 I received permission from Barbara London and Lee Witkin’s sister Carol, to pursue my idea. I approached Michael Sand, the Editor at Bulfinch, who enthusiastically took the project on. Attempting to maintain the integrity of the original while finding experts in their field to contribute essays, such as ‘Fakes & Forgeries’ by Paul Messier, ‘The Vernacular Market’ by Rodger Kingston, ‘Collecting Photographica’ by Daile Kaplan from Swann’s, ‘Conservation and Preservation’, by Peter Mustardo of The Better Image, and other’s, the revised and up-dated version will follow the original format of the Compendium, including signatures, stamps and pertinent information about the artists gleaned from the artists themselves or their representatives. Release date will be early 2007.
